BB Creams: Bust or Buy?

Happy October, everybody!

Today, I want to talk about BB creams which stands for beauty balms or blemish balms. BB creams seem to have come out of thin air within the past couple of months. From the claims on the bottle, they are God's gift to the make up counter! So, what is all the hype about? BB Cream was created more than 50 years ago by a German doctor, Dr. Christine Schrammek. It was initially created to be used to help heal skin after skin peels as well as hide any scars and redness post peel treatment. It was later introduced in Asia, specifically South Korea, where pop stars and actress made note of its ability to transform skin. With several big-name stars endorsing it in South Korea, consumers went wild for it.The trend then spread to Japan, China, South East Asia and has since made its way to Europe and the USA. The BB creams we talk about today are strictly the Western BB creams but know that there are other options available.

BB creams claim to whiten or lighten skin (for those of you with hyper pigmentation issues), cure while masking acne, and have anti-aging agents and offer minimal coverage for a natural glow. For people who apply a moisturizer, a primer, a foundation, a setting powder, and an SPF sunscreen every morning, BB creams are nothing short of a small miracle. These are one-step products that can protect, conceal, and correct skin texture and tone. While that all sounds amazing, the real question is does it work? Some have speculated that BB creams are nothing more than tinted moisturizers with fancy packaging. That is exactly the case with CoverGirls BB cream. It’s simply CoverGirl CG Smoothers Tinted Moisturizer repackaged with “BB Cream” added. Sketchy! But, for the sake of doing our own research let's dissect a few.

Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector
This was actually this first BB cream I ever bought and the first one to hit drugstores. It has an SPF 15 and is only $12.99 for 2 fluid ounces (generally you only get 1 fl oz). I got mine at Walgreen's. It only comes in two shades (Light/Medium and Medium/Deep) which is kind of a bummer but it blends out really well. This is a really thick cream (a little goes a long way!) but the coverage is minimal and felt light on my skin. It gives more of a glow than a cakey look which is awesome. Plus, it smells amazing! If you tend to have an allergy to fragrances probably want to steer clear of this product. Also, if you have really oily or acne prone skin this is NOT the one for you! By the end of the day my face was an oil slick! I have combination skin and it was extremely greasy and looked awful. I think it could work better for combos if you applied a setting powered over it but you would have to reapply multiple times a day and I think that takes away from the natural look your going for. If you have dry skin this cream would be great for you. It's extremely hydrating and can replace a moisturizer but not your sunblock (only SPF 15). Bottom line? Know your skin type for this product. If you have dry skin this is a great product. If you're already oily or combination this product is not going to look good on you by the end of the day and will more than likely cause breakouts.

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream
This was the second BB cream I tired. You can get this at any drugstore. It has an SPF 30 and it's only $8 for 1 fl oz. This product claims to be an 8 in 1 beauty balm. You can basically combined eight into three categories: hides imperfections, moisturizer and sunblock. I liked this one a lot more! It had a thinner consistency than the Garnier but with the same sheer coverage (did decent job of covering minor imperfections). It was also less shiny and greasy by the end of the day. This product comes in five different colors from light to deep so it's easier to get a perfect match. With an SPF 30 (active ingredient being titanium dioxide so it protects against UVA and UVB rays)  and having a 70% moisture content it can replace your sunblock and moisturizer. If you have normal or combo skin this is going to be a good cream for you to try. It's not so greasy therefore, the chances of it clogging your pores and causing breakouts are far less. It's cheap, hydrating without being oily and has a great SPF to protect your skin.

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream

Smashbox is one of my top ten  favorite lines. You can find it at Sephora, Ulta or Beauty Brands. This BB cream is more expensive. It's about $39 for 1 fluid ounces (crazy!). It comes in four colors fair to dark. Smashbox claims it's a primer, moisturizer, prefector, protector, and control oil. It does not, however, claim to heal or lighten which is the whole point of BB creams. It gives nice coverage without being super matte or oily. The coverage is fuller than Maybelline or Gariner so if you're looking to cover acne, scars or just like fuller coverage this one may be for you. With an SPF of 35 it can be worn without applying sunblock eliminating a step from your regular routine and a layer of gunk on your skin. This would be a great BB cream for those with oily skin as opposed to the aforementioned due to the oil controlled matte. This product is great all except for the price. Keeping in mind it's seemingly a glorified tinted moisturizer (albeit a good one), if your budget allows and you have tried the lower end BB creams (which I would recommend before investing) this is overall a great product.

Even if these are just tinted moisterizers, I think we have a few pretty great products on our hands. They are still allowing us to cut out our hydrating creams and sunscreens in some cases. In my opinion, BB creams are definitely worth a shot!
